Museum of North Sumatra |
The museum stands on an area of 10,468 square meters, consists of two floors of the main building which serves as a permanent exhibition hall, temporary exhibition space, space audio-visual/ceramah, head of museum space, administration, guidance section of space, a library, a micro- films, computer rooms, and warehouses. In architecture, form the main building of this museum illustrates the traditional home of North Sumatra. At the front of the roof is filled with ornaments of ethnic Malay, Batak Toba, Simalungun, Karo, Mandailing, Pakpak and Nias.
Based on a collection owned, the State Museum of North Sumatra province is categorized as a public museum. Most of the collection comes from North Sumatra form objects cultural heritage ranging from prehistoric, classical Hindu-Buddhist influence, Islam, to the history of the struggles of the present. The other half come from other parts of Indonesia and from other countries such as Thailand. Until 2005 the State Museum of North Sumatra store approximately 6799 collections.
The prehistoric
In the first room is shown from the formation of the geological history of the universe, continental drift, and the island of Sumatra. Natural history of human migration, spread of flora and fauna, it is also about prehistoric life. Collection includes replicas of animals displayed typical Sumatra, replicas of early human fossils, dioramas of prehistoric life, as well as a variety of prehistoric tools.
ANCIENT CULTURE NORTH SUMATRA
Showing traces of the early civilizations of North Sumatra, the megalithic period . Collections are displayed include findings such megalith culture of stone coffins (sarcophagi), religious objects such as statues of stone and wood, sticks shamanism, drug containers of ivory, and a collection of ancient Batak manuscripts written on bark called pustaha Laklak.

THE KINGDOM OF HINDU-BUDDHA
Hindu and Buddhist civilization spread to Indonesia along with expanding Asian trade around the 2nd century AD. This room displays a collection of Hindu-Buddhist religious relics found in North Sumatra, including the findings of the archaeological site and the site enshrinement Padang Lawas Chinese cities. Museum collection includes statues of stone, bronze, pottery shards and ancient currencies, is also a replica of the main temple of Candi Bahal I.
THE KINGDOM OF ISLAM
The room displays various artifacts Islam Islamic relics such as replicas of the tomb of the Muslim tombstones found in the Barus, North Sumatra. And the Islamic heritage patterned headstone typical Batak, some of the Qur’an, and the old Islamic manuscript written by hand. As well as a replica of a mosque in Medan Azizi (note: precisely in Tanjung Pura, Langkat; country of birth Amir Hamzah).
Colonialism IN NORTHERN SUMATRA
Before the Dutch East Indies government and ruled in Sumatra, employers from Europe, especially Germany have come and establish plantations in Sumatra. Colonial collection brings us back to those times, when the progress of the plantation as a field has spawned a rich multicultural city, unique, and interesting. Collections are displayed include colonial trade commodities, tools, and currency plantations, historic photographs are rare, colonial figure models, as well as a replica of the city of Medan past life.
FIGHT OF THE NORTHERN SUMATRA
As with other areas of Indonesia, North Sumatra has grown the seeds of resistance against invaders long before independence. Space tells the history of the struggle of the people of North Sumatra struggle since before 1908 until his physical revolution 1945-1949, also presented the history of the struggle of the press in North Sumatra. Museum collection includes traditional and modern weapons, traditional medicine, communications equipment used against the invaders. Also featured paintings of heroism and wartime propaganda posters.
GOVERNOR & HEROES NORTH SUMATRA
This space features the national hero who comes from North Sumatra province, also the former governor who has contributed to build and promote the province of North Sumatra. A collection of photographs and paintings of the hero and former governor of North Sumatra.
